ABOUT

Marlies and Joyce, founders of Campus Nervus

Passion at heart, living at high pace. Both Joyce and Marlies decided very early on they would get the most out of life's professional opportunities. Their divergent paths (one an economist, the other a psychotherapist) later appeared remarkably similar.

A training course on Polyvagal Theory by Luc Swinnen brought them together.

How and when exactly the idea originated? They can't really say. Suddenly they were brainstorming over lunch, and a year and a half later, Campus Nervus was a reality. It characterizes them both; when the fire starts burning, they follow the flame. After every contact, that fire only grew stronger.

They come from two different worlds. Where one uses a paper planner, the other always has her iPhone within reach. One goes to the hairdresser every five weeks, the other every two years. Boxing versus yoga, running versus… well, rather not. Bruges versus Ghent. But it is precisely these differences that make their collaboration so powerful.

Each in their own way, they have been delving into the subject of the nervous system for over 10 years. With Campus Nervus, they bring this knowledge together and want to share the information and concrete tools with others. Because that is what Campus Nervus is all about: creating a regulated nervous system. It is their firm believe everything gets better then.

Curious about how they use their differences to help others? Then be sure to read on.

It comes as no surprise that, as an economist, I'm fascinated by numbers and systems. What stands out in the various roles I perform(ed) is the connection to the human psyche. Why do people do what they do? Why do we tend to get stuck when we actually want to move forward?
It strikes me how the right flow can propel people and teams to unprecedented heights, but also how quickly we get caught up in the daily grind – inboxes, deadlines, and the endless rabbit hole of the internet. The result? Stress, stagnation, and a tsunami of burnouts.

It goes without saying that, as the mother of two eager boys and one beautiful star, I too often have to rebalance. This search has already yielded much as I, for instance, have had a practice for yoga and mindfulness for several years now.
Through Luc Swinnen, the Polyvagal Theory crossed my path and everything fell into place: a scientific base for what I had felt and experienced for so long.

As a psychotherapist and trainer, I am always seeking applicable knowledge. When a topic fascinates me, I can't let go.

For the past 10 years, I have been helping families find ways to settle into their reality and providing training to teachers and care providers. Time and again, I arrive at the same core: how the brain, the inner world, and behavior influence each other. That puzzle continues to fascinate me.I love exploring where the missing pieces are.

The birth of our eldest son rekindled my passion. After a traumatic birth and admission to the NICU, he seemed physically recovered. His nervous system (the invisible) was completely dysregulated. We took our baby home healthy, but something felt off. He did not find any peace, not even near us.

Seven years later, I know for sure: it is never too late to heal your nervous system. That knowledge changed my life and my work.
